We’ve all heard of cocktails, and we’ve all probably tried one in some form, but how much about these delicious concoctions of ingredients do we know? Often enjoyed as part of a lavish celebration such as a wedding, cocktails have been around for centuries and can take many forms.
But why are these mixtures of alcoholic spirits known as cocktails, what is the world’s most famous cocktail, and where did the world’s first alcoholic cocktail originate?
All the above and more will soon become clearer as we look at four fun facts about cocktails.
The word cocktail’ MAY be derived from an animal suppository.
There are conflicting reports regarding the origin of the word cocktail’, but a lot of evidence does point to the fact that the name is derived from a horse suppository of all things.
The belief is that, back in the 1700s, if a person had a horse they wished to sell, they would insert a small piece of ginger up the horse’s behind. This would cause it to cock’ its tail’ into the air to make it look healthier, happier, and more energetic to prospective buyers.
This was known as a cocktail’.
Because alcoholic drinks were believed to perk you up and give you more energy, the connection between the two was made, some even say that ginger was used in many early recipes (fresh, of course).
The first cocktail was believed to be the Sazerac.
The first alcoholic cocktail is thought to have originated in America, in New Orleans of all places, in 1838.
The cocktail in question was the Sazerac and was created by an apothecary by the name of Antoine Peychaud. The drink consisted of bitters, a dash of absinthe, a sugar cube, and a cognac called Sazerac.
The cocktail is still famous today, though now it is often made with whisky, with the absinthe omitted so as not to make the drink too boozy.
There are several theories about why we clink glasses during a toast.
Before enjoying a tasty beverage with company, people often clink their glasses during a toast, but why? Well, there are several theories.
One theory is that the clinking sound made by the glasses would ward off evil spirits. Others believe it harkens back to times when people often tried to poison each other. How nice.
The general consensus, though, is that the gentle clink of the glasses would please all five human senses and would therefore help to create a more pleasant and enjoyable drinking experience. We’ll go with that theory as it sounds much better than drinkers trying to poison one another.
The Old Fashioned is the world’s most famous cocktail.
While cocktails such as a Long Island Iced Tea, a Moscow Mule, Sex on the Beach, or a Mojito, are all hugely popular, there’s one cocktail that stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of popularity. The cocktail in question is the Old Fashioned.
An Old Fashioned cocktail is made from rye or Bourbon whiskey, Angostura bitters, a few dashes of water, a sugar cube, and an orange peel garnish.
It is the most popular cocktail because of its simplicity to make, the availability of whiskey and, of course, because it tastes so darned delicious.
